Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Jan Vines has always had a passion for helping people. "I always wanted to see people happy", she said. "When I was a child I enjoyed making people laugh". She also recalls sitting and listening to the stories and wisdom of her grandparents and their friends.
As she continued to follow her passion, she became employed in the field of Customer Service and Sales. By way of her professional career, she has been able to continue her love for helping people.
While being employed at Elmwood Cemetery for many years, Jan wanted to provide an avenue where indivuals could share stories that would encourage others. Uncertain of where to begin, Jan decided to pray and allow God to give her direction. “I wanted to make sure this is what I was called to do”, she said. “Sometimes we can do things that we were never called to do”. God gave Jan an answer and she begin to move forward.
Jan’s vision was to create a magazine. The magazine would provide an avenue for business owners to advertise. She also wanted to provide an opportunity for business owners to share their story of how they started their business. “I wanted the magazine to encourage readers and other business owners that all things are possible”, Jan said. “I also wanted everyone to be inspired not to give up, but to keep moving. We see and patronize the business owners on a daily basis, but we don’t know their story.” Originally, the magazine was only to focus on the hair care industry. After having a few business owners inquire about being a part of the magazine, the concept has changed.
With the third edition soon to be released, Jan is encouraged to continue to keep Faith, Hair and Styles Magazine going strong. When Jan is not working with customers at Elmwood or working on the magazine, she enjoys spending time with her family. She also enjoys going to church. Jan is an active member of New Hope Baptist Church, where Dr. Gregory L. Clarke is pastor. At New Hope, she is a Deaconess, Sanctuary Choir member, Sunday School attendee and Prison Ministry member.
